NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Students will receive their Term 2 schedules in their 2nd block classes on Wednesday, October 21. Be sure to bring these schedules back for Term 2 because No additional schedules will be ran for pick up on November 2nd.
• If you are interested in applying for Student Council, applications will be available on November 3rd in the main office. Also, you must attend a mandatory student/parent meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 12th at either 7:15 am or 6:00 pm in room A113. Applications are due Monday, November 16th. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Handa or Mrs. Watson in the A117 TPC.
• Team Placement tryouts for Silverhawk bowling are Thursday and Friday, October 29th and 30th. No experience is necessary. lswbowling@hotmail.com for more information.
• Each month the teachers at Southwest nominate students for displaying good character. Congratulations to the following students who were nominated for exhibiting the good characteristic of by being trustworthy.  We thank and appreciate you for having helped to make Southwest a great place to be.

RECURRING ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Lincoln Rampage Lacrosse, the premier varsity-level boy’s club lacrosse team in Lincoln, will have their first meeting for the spring 2010 season on October 21 at the Gere Library community rooms from 7-7:30pm. Details at www.lincolnlax.net.
• The LSW Multicultural Student Caucus will meet every Thursday at 3:15pm in room B201.
• LSW STAND Chapter, Students Taking Action Now; Darfur, meets Monday mornings, B201 at 7:15
• Boys basketball players interested in purchasing basketball shoes; see Coach Baack no later than Oct 21st.
• During finals Oct. 22nd, and 23rd, a limited hot lunch will be served in the cafeteria. There will be no fast food items or salad bar. We will be serving from 12:15 to 12:45.
• The Media Center will be open for study and project completion from 7:15 - 4:30 beginning October 15 and continuing through Wednesday, October 21.

FROM THE COUNSELING CENTER:

• The Nebraska State College System will sponsor NSCS Application Week, October 19-24. Chadron, Peru and Wayne State College representatives will visit high schools to assist students with applying to one or more of our colleges. Since college representatives cannot get to every high school, counselors are asked to partner with us in this effort by encouraging students to apply online and assisting them with the online applications. Beginning October 19 at 9 a.m., students can go to our website at www.nscs.edu and click on the APPLY NOW! button (see attached so you know what to look for on the website) to apply to one or more of our colleges. During this week, there will be no application fee. The goal is to provide access and assistance for every graduating senior who wants to apply online to one of the member colleges of the Nebraska State College System.

• Soroptimist is an international organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. Soroptimist is concerned with the special challenges facing today’s girls and young women. The organization launched the Violet Richardson Award program in 2000 as a way to recognize girls for their volunteer service to their communities. The program honors young women between the ages of 14 and 17 whose volunteer efforts include: helping other disadvantaged girls; fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty.
• Participating Soroptimist clubs implement the program at the local level, where awards vary. Club-level recipients then become eligible for a $1,000 cash award, with a matching $1,000 cash award for the charitable organization of the recipient's choosing. The Soroptimist organization grants one finalist $2,500 award to the recipient's volunteer organization.

• High achieving high school scholars are invited to look into the Cambridge College Programme, a summer academic and leadership experience in Cambridge, England. More information can be found at www.cambridgecollegeprogramme.org
• Any student interested in an academic challenge and an opportunity to gain scholarship monies should check out the American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program. Scholarships awards range from $18,000 to $14,000 for National winners. For more information please go to www.legion.org.

• The John F. Kennedy Foundation encourages students to participate in the 2010 John F. Kennedy's Profile in Courage Essay Contest. Winners receive a $5000 scholarship. More information is available at www.jfklibrary.org
• The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Nebraska has many opportunities for students interested in writing essays on Americanism and Patriotism. Various awards and deadlines. See Mr. Ernst by October, 23rd
• The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C., by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award! • The University of Nebraska at Kearney will host its 7th Annual Multicultural Scholars and Leaders Day on Wednesday, October 28th from 9am until 3:15pm. . This event is open to all seniors.
