The final four weeks of term two tend to bring a mix of excitement and anxiety. Many of our students balance the joy of beginning their winter activities, putting on winter shows and the upcoming winter break with the stress of having so many different events squeezed into a short period of time. Add to that the demands of their coursework and looming final exams and it can cause students to feel overwhelmed. To help our students remember just how much they are capable of, our monthly Positive Behavior Intervention and Support lesson will focus on providing students with information and strategies for maintaining a growth mindset as they approach a busy part of their schedule. At the beginning of each school year, we share strategies for developing a growth mindset with students to help build their capacity to recognize their own potential and we have learned over the years that providing a mid-year reminder helps students revisit the goals that they set at the beginning of the year and remain focused on a strong finish to the semester.
Last month we welcomed a team of educators from across the state into our building as a part of the district accreditation process. During their visit, the external team members visited classrooms, interviewed students and staff, and spent time examining artifacts representing the various systems and supports that we have in place at Southwest. We have not yet received the final report with feedback specific to our building but the teams overall district findings were very complimentary of the work taking place across Lincoln Public Schools. The members of the team who visited Southwest also took some time to share how warm and welcoming they found our building to be during their time here. Sometime over the next few weeks, we should receive more information about our areas of strength and feedback on where we can look to make improvements as a school.
We would also like to give a big shout out and thank you to the Silver Hawk Booster Club for their hard work and generous contribution to our Adopt-A-Hawk program. Each year the Silver Hawk Boosters make it a priority to contribute gift cards to help LSW families in need have access to groceries, clothing and gas over the winter months. This is just one of the many examples of their unwavering commitment to helping all of our Silver Hawks and we are grateful for their support.
As we head towards winter break, I encourage you to find some time to take in one of our winter events over the next few weeks. Our instrumental and vocal music groups all have end of the term concerts coming up and our theater program’s winter show gets things started December 6-8. Winter activities are already underway so there is no shortage of opportunities to see the great things our Silver Hawks are doing in addition to all of the work they are putting into their classes.
We are poised to end term two on a positive note. Please encourage your students to plan ahead as they prepare for final exams by communicating with their teachers to ask questions and receive extra help when needed so that they may make the most of the time remaining before classes dismiss for winter break.
Thanks for all you do for our Silver Hawks.
